The Bonnie Brown Premedical Scholarship

Investing in the next generation of physicians since 1989.

Since 1989, the New Hanover-Pender County Medical Society has awarded an annual premedical scholarship to a University of North Carolina Wilmington student preparing for a career in medicine. In recognition of her 40 years of leadership and service as Executive Director, the scholarship was renamed the Bonnie Jeffreys Brown Premedical Scholarship.

Through this scholarship, NHPCMS is proud to invest in the next generation of physicians and support students who will one day serve our community with skill and compassion.

Student Athletic Screenings

Building stronger futures through community care.

For decades, physicians of the New Hanover-Pender County Medical Society have come together to provide free athletic screening exams for local student-athletes and cheerleaders. Offered in collaboration with New Hanover County Schools and the New Hanover County Department of Health and Human Services, these screenings make participation in school sports possible for many families and reflect our members’ commitment to supporting youth and community health. With the exception of 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced a cancellation, the program has been held annually, serving anywhere from 272 to over 1,000 students each year.

School Health Assessment Outreach

Supporting families and keeping kids in the classroom.

In 2024, the New Hanover County Department of Health and Human Services launched an outreach clinic to ensure that uninsured children entering school have access to required health assessments. This initiative serves two key groups:

  • Incoming Kindergarten students
  • Students new to North Carolina

State law requires these students to complete a North Carolina health assessment within 30 days of the start of school. Without this documentation, principals are required to exclude students until the paperwork is provided.

By providing free health assessments, this outreach reduces barriers to care, helps families meet state requirements, and most importantly, keeps students from missing valuable school days. The New Hanover-Pender County Medical Society is proud to support this effort, which reflects our shared commitment to the health and success of every child in our community.

Other Projects / Donations

  • MedNorth (formerly New Hanover Community Health Center): Local Medical Society physicians played a key role in launching this clinic, which went on to provide affordable healthcare services to residents of New Hanover County.

  • Tileston Outreach Clinic Volunteer Program: For many years, physician volunteers delivered essential, free medical care at this downtown clinic, expanding access to underserved community members.

  • Over the years, the Society supported the community in many ways, including providing CPR mannequins and educational tee-shirts to schools, running radio public service announcements (PSAs) on immunization and renal health, writing health articles for local media, and contributing to initiatives such as Habitat for Humanity, culminating in a house dedication in August 2010.
