2025 President’s Message

Dear Colleagues,

It is both an honor and a privilege to serve as President of the New Hanover-Pender County Medical Society in 2025. As I reflect on why this work matters, I am reminded of two moments from this year that embody two of my priorities.

The first was during our Med Mingle event. After sitting at our first assigned table, we were a bit shy—but as we answered the prompts and shared about ourselves, warmth and connection quickly became palpable. That opportunity to connect and grow a sense of belonging is what our Society has always been about: linking physicians across specialties, generations, and practice settings in support of one another.

The second was listening to the story of a widow of a physician who died by suicide. Her story was heartbreaking, and it underscored the urgent need to strengthen support for physician wellness and to normalize asking in some form, “Are you okay?” Too many of our colleagues struggle silently, and our Society has a responsibility to help.

With those stories in mind, our shared mission comes into focus through five priorities:

  • Reconnect & Renew

In a time when digital fatigue and increasing patient demands place stress on clinical practice, our Society must redouble efforts to foster human connection—through regular meetings, service opportunities and meaningful social events.

  • Strengthen Advocacy

We stand at a critical juncture as changes in North Carolina Medicaid coverage and scope of practice continue to affect both our patients and our profession. Unified, our voices hold power in Raleigh and Washington. Let us once again rally behind the NC Medical Society PAC and elevate our collective advocacy efforts.

  • Embrace Innovation Responsibly

ChatGPT and large language models are rapidly changing how we access knowledge and perform daily tasks. Our challenge is not only to harness these tools, but to ensure they enhance, rather than replace, the physician’s wisdom and judgment.

  • Serve Our Community

The Society coordinates physician volunteers for the annual Pre-Participation Sports Physicals for New Hanover County student-athletes and uninsured kindergarten students needing pre-enrollment physicals at no cost to the families. Recent data shows nearly 10% of adults in our counties remain uninsured, reminding us of the importance of programs like the school and sports physicals.

  • Nurture the Next Generation

Through scholarships (Bonnie Jeffreys Brown Premedical Scholarship and the Gottovi Scholarship), mentorship, and career development initiatives, we can lift up local medical students, residents and new attendees—ensuring that they feel supported, valued, and connected to our shared mission.

I am deeply grateful to our Executive Director Amber Neisler, dedicated Board, past presidents, volunteers and YOU who make this work possible. Each time you attend a meeting, mentor a colleague, or volunteer at a community event, you strengthen our Society and our community. Many thanks to our meeting guests this year, including the CEO of the New Hanover County Endowment, local Novant Health administrative leadership, and the North Carolina Professionals Health Program and Alliance, who shared insights about physician suicide. I also thank our members for participating in our first Med Mingle networking event. We anticipate fun and connection at the upcoming Summer, North Carolina Medical Society and Holiday Socials.

As we continue to move through 2025, I look forward to listening, learning, and serving with you. I encourage each of you to attend a meeting, volunteer, or mentor a colleague.

Together, may 2025 be a year of renewal, strengthened connections, and meaningful impact in our community.
With respect and gratitude,

Aaron Kline, MD
